4 States That Will See Manufacturing Growth This Year

The death of manufacturing jobs has been greatly exaggerated. With the move toward more and more automation, there has naturally been concern about manufacturing jobs disappearing, but, in fact, today’s machines often serve to make human manufacturing jobs easier rather than replace them.

From 2000 to 2014, manufacturing jobs did decline, but since then, they’ve rebounded strong, gaining back 828,000 jobs. Of course, growth is not equal everywhere in the United States, and if you’re planning to open a manufacturing facility, it may interest you to know where the future of manufacturing might be. Here are four states where we can expect to see manufacturing growth this year.

Michigan

Naturally, where the automobile industry goes, so goes Michigan, and after many well-publicized struggles, the automotive industry in the United States does appear to be experiencing a resurgence. Since 2010, Grand Rapids-Wyoming, Michigan, has increased its industrial workforce 29 percent, with 5.4 percent job growth just in 2015. The greater Detroit area features 240,000 manufacturing jobs, many of which are in the “Automation Alley” of Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills, which has seen a 30.6 percent growth in industrial workforce since 2010.

Indiana

If any state is a manufacturing state, it is Indiana, where nearly 50 percent of the workforce is engaged in manufacturing jobs. Indiana lost a massive amount of manufacturing jobs during the recession but has steadily been gaining them back. The biggest segment of manufacturing in Indiana, pharmaceutical manufacturing, is poised to see significant growth, with a projected 5.8 percent annual growth rate from 2017 to 2021.

Montana

In 2015, Montana’s economy jumped $1.5 billion over the previous year, a 3.5 percent growth rate. Much of that growth came from the manufacturing sector, which grew at a stunning 12.5 percent rate. Montana also features one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation at 4.1 percent.

Oregon

Oregon’s economic output is growing like wildfire, largely due to its manufacturing industry. Its GDP expanded close to a whopping $5 billion from 2014 to 2015. Manufacturing is Oregon’s biggest industry, so this massive growth has clearly been spurred on by manufacturing growth, which saw an expansion of 5.7 percent from 2014 to 2015.
